A Precious Gift--Never Forget Janessa & Hope Abigail

The mention of my daughter's name may bring tears to my eyes, but it never fails to bring music to my ears. If you really want to show me that you care, let me hear the beautiful music of her name. It soothes my broken heart and sings to my soul.

"If you know someone who has lost a child, and you're afraid to mention them because you think you might make them sad by reminding them that they died--you're not reminding them. They didn't forget they died.

What you're reminding them of is that you remembered that they lived, and that is a great gift."

You Don't Have to Be Like Everyone Else

I discovered something this weekend.  I did something I didn't think I could do that everyone else said brought them peace and healing.  It didn't bring me the peace and healing and joy and happiness I thought it would.  At first I felt terrible, like there must be something wrong with me because it worked for everyone else.  I was emotionally beating myself up because this common thing didn't work for me.  Then I realized that it's okay that I didn't find peace and healing, I find it through different things that maybe others wouldn't find peace and healing through.

That's the thing with grief, it is different for everyone.  We go through similar feelings, but, things affect each one of us differently and that is okay.  Things that work for others to bring them peace and healing doesn't mean it will work for all of us.  Each of us find the peace, healing, comfort, happiness, and joy through different things and that is okay.  I guess I just wanted to share this if you read through things on my blog or others blogs of things they have done and then when you tried it and it didn't work the same way.  Don't get discouraged, don't get frustrated, don't think that there must be something wrong with you like I did this weekend.

Heavenly Father knows what will work to bring you those peaceful, healing feelings and He will guide you towards those things.  We all share in this sisterhood of grief, but, we are all different, we all grieve differently, we all find peace and healing differently and that is OKAY! :)

Capture Your Grief

I was so excited to read about Carly Marie's Capture Your Grief--31 day Photograph Challenge for the month of October.  I was reading through the topics that she has for each day and this is exactly the thing I need to help me heal a little.  If I can figure out how to post things to her facebook page I will share there and I'm excited to see other blm's pictures, but, most of the days I will just post my pictures here on my blog.  If you would like more details this is her blog link http://carlymarieprojectheal.com/2012/09/capture-your-grief-this-october-2012-for-pregnancy-infant-loss-awareness-month.html

These are the topics for all 31 days of  the challenge:

Day 1. Sunrise I thought it would be sweet for us all to capture the beginning of this beautiful project and important month by us all getting up early to photograph the sunrise from wherever we are in the world. I know depending on where you are and what climate you are in that there may not be a sunrise, but if you can still get to a window, snap a photo of the morning! When you share your photo online make sure you write what State/Country you are in and the time of the sunrise {just for fun!}
Day 2. Before Loss Self Portrait Share a photo of you before your loss.
Day 3. After Loss Self Portrait Share a photo of you after your loss.
Day 4. Most Treasured Item Something that relates to your baby/ies/child/ren. Maybe it is their hand and foot prints or a photograph. Whatever it is we would love to see it.
Day 5. Memorial This could be anything you have had done in memory of your baby/ies/child/ren. It could be their plaque at the cemetery or a tree that has been planted in their memory, anything at all.
Day 6. What Not To Say Have you had something terrible said to you in the wake of your loss, write it on a piece of paper – photograph it – vent it.
Day 7. What To Say We all talk about the bad things people say to us but we rarely focus on the good that people say to us. Share a tip for those who don’t have any idea on what to say. Write it own – photograph it.
Day 8. Jewellery Do you have a piece of jewellery in memory of your baby/ies/child/ren? Share it!
Day 9. Special Place This could be a place that you visit that brings you peace. Maybe it is a place that you went to when you were pregnant or where your child’s place of rest is.
Day 10. Symbol Do you have a symbol for your baby/ies/child/ren? It could be a butterfly, dragonfly, a humming-bird, dolphin, seashell, share what it is and why it is so symbolic to you.
Day 11. Supportive Friends/Family Who has been there for you?
Day 12. Scents Do you have a scent that you relate to your baby/ies/child/ren? Is it a candle scent, perfume, food or maybe a flower? Share it with us!
Day 13. Signs If you believe in signs from your child/ren, share with us an experience you have had.
Day 14. Community Our community is so amazing, but with that being said, none of us want to be a member. Share a photo of a community gathering or event that you have attended.
Day 15. WAVE of LIGHT Today is October 15th Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Light a candle at 7pm to help create a continuous wave of light around the world for 24 hours. Photograph your light!
Day 16. Release Balloons, lanterns, butterflies, doves.
Day 17. Anniversary/Birthday/Due Dates Share a photo of what you did for your baby/ies/child/rens special day. Did you hide away in bed? Did you have a cake? Did you have a party? What did you do?
Day 18. Your Family Portrait Take a photo of you with your family, work out a way to incorporate your baby/ies/child/ren who are no longer physically with you anymore. You could hold up photos of them or even just hold their names with you. What does your family look like now? Is it just you left here? Do you have a large family? Is it just you and your partner?
Day 19. Project Have you worked on any projects inspired by your loss. They could be anything from an art project to organizing memory boxes for a hospital. If you have not yet done a project you could share something that you would like to work on.
Day 20. Charity/Organization Share your favourite charity or organization that has touched your heart on this road of grief. If you don’t have a photograph to share, just simply post the link to their website!
Day 21. Altar/Shrine/Sacred Space Share a photo of your special place in your home/garden for your baby/ies/child/ren.
Day 22. Place of Care/Birth The place that looked after your you whilst you were pregnant. Share a photo of those who took care of you and your baby. This could be a midwife/doula/friend/partner.
Day 23. Their Name/Their Photo If you feel comfortable, share a photo of your baby/ies/child/ren who you are remembering this month. If you do not have photos, you could use an ultrasound image or something that represents them.
Day 24. Siblings Obviously not everyone can use siblings as a subject but I felt it was important to include the children who are left here to grieve their brothers and sisters. Capture a sibling, niece or nephew’s grief. Maybe you could share a drawing they have done or even just a photo of them holding something that represents their brother or sister that they are missing. Give them a voice here.
Day 25. Baby Shower/Blessing Share a photo from your baby shower or blessing. Maybe you could show everyone the gifts you received that you were not able to use.
Day 26. Their Age How old was your baby/ies/child/ren when they died. Write it down on a piece of paper. If they died whilst you were pregnant you can write their gestation.
Day 27. Artwork Share some artwork that reminds you of your baby/ies/child/ren or something that was created for them by you or someone else.
Day 28. Memory Share one of your most significant memories on this journey of grief, it can be a positive or negative memory.
Day 29. Music This might be hard to capture in a photograph so break the rules (that we don’t have, hah!) and post a youtube clip of a piece of music that reminds your of your baby/ies/child/ren
Day 30. Your Grief – Tell The World What do you want the world to know about this road you are travelling? Do you just want your baby’s name to be spoken? Do you want others to know they are not alone? Whatever it is, write it down on a piece of paper and hold it up for the world to see! (We will be making a video clip of these images from this particular day!)
Day 31. Sunset To close this project and month I thought that we could all photograph the sunset from wherever we are in the world. If there is no sunset where you are, you can still take a photo of the early evening sky. You just need to be able to get to a window.
This project was created In Loving Memory of all the babies who died during pregnancy and the little ones that could only stay with their parents for the shortest of times. No parent should ever have to bury their child. We will speak about these precious lives. We will honour them. We will remember them.
Please share this project with anyone who you think it would help.
Love and blessings.k

I Don't Want to Lose You

The other day I was watching the movie Chestnut while I exercised.  When it got to the part in the movie where one of the little girls is lost this song "I Don't Want To Lose You" came on--it made me cry.  Some days this is how I feel and my progress on the grief journey comes to a halt while I yell, scream, stomp my feet, and cry.  If this is one of those days for you ((HUGS)).

A Precious Picture from Sohani

I got a hug from heaven today. I received a progress report on the little girl, Sohani, that we are sponsoring through World Vision. It had a new picture of her—she is so cute and she looks so much older and it has a drawing of her hand print that she painted. It makes me so happy to get this. It also makes me sad because a part of me wishes it was from Janessa, but, since that can not happen in this life, I will be content and find joy in seeing Sohani grow up instead.

Janessa & Hopes Prayer Flags

Janessa & Hopes Prayer flags are on their way to Australia for Carly Marie's Oct. 15th Beach Prayer Flag Project.  I have been staying up until midnight the past couple of nights creating and sewing their flags.  It has been exhausting, stressful, and so rewarding.  I finished them yesterday afternoon and I am so happy about how they turned out!  It brought me great joy to be able to create something that represented my 2 angel babies.

This was part of the note I sent with the flags to explain what the symbols stood for:

These flags were made in remembrance of my angel babies Janessa Shauna Cox and Hope Abigail Cox.  Janessa was stillborn on 3/09/2010--I carried her for 36 weeks.  Hope Abigail was my rainbow baby that I loss on May 7, 2011--I carried her for 10 weeks.
Symbolism on Janessa's Prayer Flag:  Butterflies, because Janessa was my precious butterfly that flew away too soon.  The feet butterfly is Janessa's footprints.  There are 3 balloons and 6 pinwheel  stamps to stand for 36, the number of weeks I carried her and because releasing balloons and creating pinwheel pictures has brought me peace since her death.  The angel stands for Precious Angel which is what we had put on her grave marker.  On the back (I'm not sure the little stars and heart jewels will survive the journey)  there is a J for Janessa which is what I would do when it snowed is go out and make a giant snow heart and then put a J in it so it was a personal message of  love to Janessa from me and the stars represent the lanterns from the movie Tangled and that every year on Janessa's birthday I will light candles in memory of her.

Symbolism on Hope Abigail's Prayer Flag:  Rainbows--because she was suppose to be my rainbow baby, hearts--because she allowed me to have courage to have another baby and to love another baby despite the fear and because she broke my heart again, ladybugs--my symbol for Hope because on a dark winter day when I was feeling down I found a ladybug inside my house and it brought me joy and hope, the ladybugs also have 7 dots for Hope's Angel Date, also that she is my 7th daughter and there are 10 ladybugs to symbolize the 10 weeks I carried her and also that there are 10 people in our family.  The hearts in a circle symbolize eternity and that I believe I will see my angel babies again and we will be together for eternity.

Hugs,

Just an Ordinary Day

My first thoughts yesterday as I remembered Janessa on her half birthday was I wish that Sept. 9th was just a plain ordinary day. I wish it didn't mark a half way point. For everyone else but my husband and I it probably was just an ordinary day. For us it marks 6 months since her last angel birthday and 6 months until her next angel birthday. It is a day for reflection for me to look back and see how far I've come, but, it is also a day of sadness for me to remember how long it has been since I last saw her and held her in my arms and also sadness in knowing that another empty angel birthday is coming again. I fell apart at church yesterday seeing people hug and encourage my friend who started to cry because her grief is a seen and an acceptable grief--I have longed for that type of caring and support for the past 2 1/2 years, but my grief is a silent grief that no one wants to acknowledge and now is a forgotten grief.  I also fell apart seeing someone hold another persons baby and be all excited and happy.

For the last 2 years I have wanted and hoped that someone would write Janessa's name or remember her in some way on this day--nothing at 6 months, nothing at 18 months and I had given up hope for today at 30 months until I openned up an email from Katherine, angel baby Gabriel's Mommy who does Gabriels Garden and she had lit a candle for both Janessa and Hope and wrote their names earlier in the week and sent me the pictures today. These pictures brought me such joy yesterday. It means so much to me to have their little lives recognized and validated. It is a little thing, but it means the world to me. It helped this what I wish was an ordinary day become an extraordinary day!

2 1/2

My sweet Janessa you would be 2 1/2 today.  You're my only child that I celebrate 1/2 birthdays with.  I guess because your angel birthday is in March and it is normally cold and sometimes snowing and raining so I can't decorate your grave with real flowers then.  On your half birthday I can leave you real roses and balloons.  Time seems to slip away quickly and slowly at the same time now.  I've turned my focus to butterflies because you were my beautiful butterfly that flew away too soon and because I feel like for the past 2 1/2 years I have been wrapped in a cocoon of grief that I am slowly trying to emerge from and become a new butterfly (a blm mommy who has a new perspective on life and what is really important).  I will never forget you!  I am a better person because of you!  I will always remember and honor your memory, even though others have forgotten you and try to erase you from existence!  As I spread my wings to fly in this "new normal" life I have been given, you and Hope are part of the beautiful pattern of my wings and you are the wind beneath my wings to help me fly.

I Love You, my precious angel Janessa!

Love, Mommy

Be Still and Know that I am God

Sometimes God
Calms the Storm . . .
Sometimes He let's the Storm rage
and Calms His Child.
Author Unknown

At times there appears to be no light at the tunnel's end-no dawn to break the night's darkness. . .We feel abandoned, heartbroken, alone. If you find yourself in such a situation, I plead with you to turn to our Heavenly Father in faith. He will lift you and guide you. He will not always take your afflictions from you, but He will comfort and lead you with love through whatever storm you face.

-President Thomas S. Monson

We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.
