A Precious Gift--Never Forget Janessa & Hope Abigail

The mention of my daughter's name may bring tears to my eyes, but it never fails to bring music to my ears. If you really want to show me that you care, let me hear the beautiful music of her name. It soothes my broken heart and sings to my soul.

"If you know someone who has lost a child, and you're afraid to mention them because you think you might make them sad by reminding them that they died--you're not reminding them. They didn't forget they died.

What you're reminding them of is that you remembered that they lived, and that is a great gift."

Happy Easter My Precious Angel Girls!
and all their Angel Friends!

The Miracle
by Shawna Edwards

Easter is hard for me because Janessa's due date in 2010 was on April 4 which was Easter that year.  I so wanted her to be born on Easter Sunday--I thought that would be so neat.  So Easter is a reminder of an unfullfilled dream but also a reminder of another dream of being able to see both Janessa and Hope Abigail again because of Jesus Christ.

We will all be resurrected and see our loved ones again!

The unpredictability of grief is scary, to say the least. We can be in the middle of a conversation, a movie, reading a book, sitting in church, walking through the grocery store -- you name it -- and a certain word, song, smell, or other reminder appears, and we have a total melt down. We try so hard to "control" the emotional waves from child loss, but how do you put a lid on love? It can't be done! And, so we find our tears running like a river at the most unexpected, most unusual times -- just another reminder that our child is always and forever on our heart and mind. Others don't get it, but we sure do understand! There is no stronger bond of love than that of a parent for his/her child!

There are times when our grief overtakes us. We are okay for a while but then sitting among people just watching their "normalcy" seems to rip at our hearts. We long for simple things like heading a baby cry, watching our child play soccer , going to a school play, hearing about our grandchildren. When our child dies the "normal " in everything that was once our life is suddenly stripped away and it hurts worse than words could ever tell!

When does the pain of losing a child end? That's the one question parents of child loss desperately want answered. The answer in all truthfulness is never. The raw, tormenting pain grows more gentle over time but the gnawing emptiness is always present. How can it be any different when a huge part of our heart is no longer with us? And this is exactly why support and encouragement are so necessary for everyone who personally knows the pain of child loss!!!!

It seems to be an almost unwritten understanding that parents of child loss learn early on about wearing "the mask." We wear it to work so our boss doesn't think we're not coping and unable to do our job. We wear the mask around our family members so they can tolerate us. We wear the mask to church so we don't get labeled as "lacking faith". We wear our mask so others don't think we're crazy. If only people knew how much additional pain it is trying to cover up the heartbreaking pain of child loss!!!

What's the hardest part about losing a child? Finally coming to the acceptance that this is real and has happened. There is no turning back. We cannot ever change the fact that child loss occurred. For a long time we live in a fog unable to digest the reality of our loss and when the fog finally lifts, the searing pain hits all over again. Many people say while we're in the fog, "Wow! You're really handling this! You're such a strong person" when in reality our loss hasn't even fully been comprehended by us yet. Facing the reality of losing our child is devastating and breaks our heart into a million and one different pieces!

Sometimes people get angry or frustrated with grieving parents for not moving ahead in life faster. They will sometimes throw up their hands and walk away as if to say, "Enough is enough. You're going to have to get over this!" Still others will say what was told to me just the other day, "You need to go to church! Something's wrong with you!" Hmmm...I do go to church, and I do have faith in God, and I do trust that God knows what He's doing just as many of you do, BUT.....life still hurts. Trust, faith, moving on fast ---- these things have nothing to do with the pain we feel deep within our hearts. Every person grieves the loss of their child differently, and works through the pain at a different pace. And, something others need to remember is a parent never "gets over it." We work hard to find a way to live with it. And, living with child loss is the most difficult thing a person will ever have to do! Blessings to each one grieving the loss of a child! May you be granted an extra measure of peace as you travel this difficult journey of loss!

A Happy Stick

Yesterday as I was waiting for my daughter to finish her violin lesson, I saw a mother come walking up the street pushing her baby in her stroller.  Instant sadness for me, but, then I saw a little 3 year old come trailing after her.  Normally I would fall apart seeing someone Janessa's age, but, I was fascinated watching this 3 year olds joy and happiness at dragging a stick along a fence.  There was a dog on the other side of the fence that was going crazy, but, this little girl just said "hi doggie" then continued to drag her stick against a truck and then another fence.  Her mother was oblivious to all of this joy, she just turned around to scold her child to hurry up and drop that stick before she poked someone and then went back to pushing her other kid in the stroller.

Kids are so innocent and cute and full of life and find such joy and happiness in small and simple things from the ages of 2-5.  Her joy was contagious and made me feel happy too.

Made me wish I could go back in time and enjoy my living children at that stage in life--I'm afraid I was too much like that mother who was too busy to enjoy her 3 year olds happiness and just let life pass me by.  Made me wish I could see Janessa and Hope enjoying life (do they have sticks in Heaven?) I'd love to think of them walking around enjoying the beauties of Heaven with their own little sticks!!!

Since I can't have either of those wishes, maybe instead God will grant me the ability to handle seeing others 2-5 year olds and be able to enjoy watching their joy and happiness and feel a peace and happiness myself instead of it breaking my heart and causing me sadness.  <3  :)

Happy 2nd Anniversary PinWheels From Heaven

Happy 2nd Anniversary
PinWheels From Heaven!!

March 2011

March 2013
157 PinWheels

This week is the 2nd Anniversary of my blog PinWheels From Heaven.  I started it 2 years ago (1st Blog Post) when I was pregnant with Hope Abigail.  I just wanted a way to reach out to other baby loss mommies to help in some small way.  I also have found such great relief in being able to blog about my feelings and my journey along the way.  This blog has been my therapy, my healing, my way to honor and remember my little angel girls Janessa and Hope Abigail.

To celebrate my blogs 2nd Anniversary, I have taken all my written blog posts (no pictures) from that first year (2011) and compiled them together as a Kindle Book called PinWheels From Heaven My 2011 Grief Journey Journal.  I know sometimes it is hard to search back posts on a blog so this should make it a little easier.  My hope is that this book will help others know that they are not alone on this grief journey and maybe something that I have experienced or felt will help someone else.

Psalms 23:1-6
The Lord is my shepherd;  I shall not want.  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth  me beside the still waters.  He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's  sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death  I will fear no  evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou  anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.  Surely  goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Alma 40:11-12
Now, concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection—Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to that God who gave them life. And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow.

Remembering James Mattioli

Remembering James Mattioli
on his Angel Birthday today
(Sandy Hook Elementary)

"Dear friends and family:
James Mattioli's 7th birthday would have been tomorrow, Friday, March 22. When his mom was asked what we in our community and beyond might do to honor James on Friday, she said they would love it if people chose to enjoy one of the things that James loved most at some point on Friday.

... James loved being outside, he loved sports, math and cuddling on the couch in the evening with a pillow and blanket. And he loved to read as many books before bed as possible. So spread the word far and wide - at the request of James' family (his mom approved this note), take some time on Friday to think with love about beautiful, smiling James and enjoy something he loved on his birthday, by yourself or with friends or family!

9 Days Before Easter--April

Mosiah 16: 7-9
And if Christ had not risen from the dead, or have broken the bands of death that the grave should have no victory, and that death should have no sting, there could have been no resurrection. But there is a resurrection, therefore the grave hath no victory, and the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ.  He is the light and life of the world; yea, a light which is endless, that can never be darkended; yea, and lso a life which is endless, that there can be no more death.

A Balloon From Heaven?

This morning when I looked out at the Easter Angel Tree I was surprised to see a green balloon stuck in the top of it.  I grabbed my camera and took a picture because it looked like an "Angel Star" at the top of the Easter Angel Tree.  I'm glad I did, because when I looked out there this afternoon the balloon was gone.

I like to think that maybe it was Janessa sending us a balloon "Hello from Heaven" for just a little bit because we've sent her so many balloons.  It brought a smile to my face today.

Remembering Janessa on the day we said our last Goodbye March 15, 2010

Today marks 3 years since Janessa's Graveside Service.  I still remember falling apart when we got to the cemetery as our mortician, Shaina, took us to the hearse where Janessa's little pink casket was.  I remember feeling such shock at seeing how little that casket was and knowing that my baby was inside.  Shaina, reassured me that she had dressed Janessa in her burial outfit and wrapped her in her warm fuzzy white blanket and rocked her and kissed her goodbye from me and that all the little toys and pictures we had made for her were with her inside that casket.  I remember how hard it was to watch my husband carry that little casket by himself to her grave and me gripping Shaina's arm and hand for support as we followed behind.  I remember that through the service and the music we played that I had my youngest living child on my lap and my husband had another one of our children on his lap and how comforting that was as I invisioned my husbands deceased Grandparents who Janessa was being buried next to seated there with us with us holding Janessa on their lap.

I remember it was cold, but, I remember feeling warm despite the cold and I remember the complete peace I felt--it was incredible.  I remember when it was time to go that our whole family surrounded Janessa's coffin in a circle as we held hands and said one last family prayer with her.  I remember my last goodbye to Janessa was to kiss my hand and place it on her pink fuzzy casket and whisper goodbye and that I loved her.

Missing You Today Janessa :`\

When Tesha posted her picture of her angel Jonathan that Beth (Custom Digital Remembrance Art For Babies Gone Too Soon)  had made for her and I saw how beautiful it was, I knew I wanted to get one made for Janessa.  It is perfect and so beautiful.  Thank you Beth for giving me a way to have a little bit of Janessa back <3

Be Still and Know that I am God

Sometimes God
Calms the Storm . . .
Sometimes He let's the Storm rage
and Calms His Child.
Author Unknown

At times there appears to be no light at the tunnel's end-no dawn to break the night's darkness. . .We feel abandoned, heartbroken, alone. If you find yourself in such a situation, I plead with you to turn to our Heavenly Father in faith. He will lift you and guide you. He will not always take your afflictions from you, but He will comfort and lead you with love through whatever storm you face.
